Now's the Time for Morningside - Upcoming Events and Initiatives

I became more connected with the Morningside neighborhood this past summer with the Better Block project, which helped to re-imagine the public realm on one block of Tyler Street for a day. As I met some of the thinkers and do-ers in the neighborhood, I quickly learned that there is so much energy stored up here. The time is right to start harnessing that energy and doing everything we can to get neighborhood projects off and running. So, I wanted to share some of the upcoming events in Morningside that need your energy. If you want to see another side of this neighborhood that you might not know from the news or word of mouth, I invite you to visit for a night and get acquainted with us:

Morningside Initiative. This organization is celebrating its fourteenth year in 2018, and always has a seat at the table for residents or business owners in the neighborhood. The steering committee wants input from YOU on how Community Development Block Grant (CDGB) funds that the city receives can spur new projects and improvements around Morningside. The meetings are held the second Monday each month, and March's meeting is Monday the 12th, at 5:45 in Morningside Community School.

Game Night. Morningside Initiative is planning to hold its first family game night at Morningside Community School on April 4th. By then, we are hoping to welcome in spring with a night out to play some games and reconnect with friends. There will be prizes, and also the opportunity to learn about upcoming projects this spring and summer for the neighborhood.

Community Cleanup and "Bulky" Day. A day for neighbors to come out and make their streets a better place. This is your time to volunteer and show your Morningside pride by cleaning up litter, and by bringing your bulky waste to a convenient location for FREE disposal if you volunteer. If you have some old mattresses or appliances you want to dispose of, this is the place to bring them. Date and location still to be determined. Please watch for an announcement this spring!

Morningside Pride Night is back again this year! There will be activities for all ages, and a walk around the neighborhood to show your pride. Coming later this spring to Morningside Community School.

Westside/Morningside Family Night. We are in the early stage of collaborating with the Westside Initiative to hold a combined family night. We would love to hear your ideas on locations, activities, or anything else. Stop by a Morningside Initiative Meeting or contact The Pittfielder and I'll relay your message to them.

This list is by no means complete, and there will be more to come this spring and summer. I hope to begin some neighborhood "Slow Roll" bike rides this spring and summer, and new initiatives from the Tyler Street Business Group, the TDI district, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council will be rolling out this year as well. We hope to see you there!
